Hammersmith and Fulham

Inner borough of west central Greater London, north of the Thames; population (2001) 165,250.

Features

Notable features of the borough are Hammersmith Terrace, 18th-century houses along the river; the parish church of St Paul (1631); Lyric Theatre (1890); Fulham Palace, residence of the bishops of London from the 12th century until 1973, and one of the best medieval residential sites in London, with buildings dating from the 15th century; Riverside studios; Olympia exhibition centre (1884); and the 18th-century Hurlingham Club.

Famous residents of Hammersmith were Leigh Hunt and Ouida and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska.
