HeathrowMajor international airport to the west of London in the Greater London borough of Hounslow, approximately 24 km/14 mi from the city centre. Opened in 1946, it is one of the world's busiest airports, with four terminals. In 2001 the government gave the go-ahead for a controversial fifth terminal to be built. The airport was linked with the London underground system in 1977. It was the target of three mortar attacks by the Irish Republican Army (IRA) in March 1994, all of which failed to detonate.
