London Underground

First underground rail line in the world, opened in 1863. At first it was essentially a roofed-in trench. The London Underground is still the world's longest subway, with over 250 mi/400 km of routes.

After plodding through the stations on the new London metro line, I came to the reluctant conclusion that architects cannot do very much to enhance the leaden work of civil engineers.
The London metro build will extend 110 km and is expected to be completed in 2001.
