London Underground

First underground rail line in the world, opened in 1863. At first it was essentially a roofed-in trench. The London Underground is still the world's longest subway, with over 250 mi/400 km of routes.

Long after I have forgotten where Churchill is buried (somewhere overseas, I think), I will recall with perfect clarity the underground shop where I first saw the "Mind the Gap" London tube T-shirt.
After the squalor and chaos of most parts of the London tube, the new jubilee Line is a haven of physical and visual order, and to disembark at Westminster, Southwark, Canary Wharf or North Greenwich is a positive pleasure.
