long jump

Field event in athletics in which competitors sprint and jump as far as possible into a sandpit from a takeoff board. The takeoff board is one metre from the landing area, and the sandpit measures nine metres in length. In international competitions, each competitor usually has three attempts, and the leading eight athletes then have a further three jumps; the winner is the one with the longest jump.
