longhorn beetleBeetle with extremely long antennae, usually equalling the length of the entire body, and often twice its length. Their bodies are 2–150 mm/0.1–6 in long, usually cylindrical, and often mimic wasps, moss, or lichens. The larvae, white or yellow grubs, are wood-borers, mostly attacking decaying or dead wood, but they may bore into healthy trees causing much damage. At least that's the hope of the Agricultural Research Service, which has discovered adult Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) find Shantung maple (Acer mono), "downright irresistible. In the past week, three of 51 homeowners who live in the one-eighth mile tree-cutting area had refused WSDA permission to remove trees potentially infested with the citrus longhorned beetle. Three weeks after initiating the Tukwila tree-removal project, the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) and its contractor have removed nearly all 1,000 host trees within a one-eighth mile radius of the Citrus Longhorned Beetle (CLHB) introduction and escape site. |
