Longmont

City in Boulder County, north-central Colorado, USA, in the Rocky Mountain foothills, 41 km/25 mi south of Fort Collins and 30 km/19 mi northeast of Boulder; population (2000) 71,100. Situated in the fertile St Vrain Valley, irrigated by the Colorado–Big Thompson project, Longmont processes and ships beet sugar, vegetables, and livestock. Manufactures include automotive filters, chemicals, truck campers, business machines, computers, recreational vehicles, and agricultural equipment.

Longmont was founded in 1871 and incorporated as a city in 1961. The original agricultural settlement was named after the explorer Stephen H Long.
