Longview

City and administrative headquarters of Gregg County, east Texas, USA, 198 km/123 mi east of Dallas; population (2000) 73,300. Situated in the heart of the oilfields of east Texas, Longview's industries include oil and natural-gas processing, oilfield equipment, steel goods, chemicals, electronic equipment, aircraft components, farm and earth-moving machinery, and truck beds and trailers. The city home to LeTourneau University (1946) and the Caddo Indian Museum.

Longview was settled in the early 19th century and developed as a trading centre for beef cattle, pigs, and horses; it was incorporated in 1871. Oil was discovered here in 1929.
