Longwy

French town in the département of Meurthe-et-Moselle, on the River Chier, near the border with Belgium and Luxembourg; population (1990) 15,600. It has a fortress built in the 17th century by the military engineer Vauban. Longwy is in an iron-mining district, and has metallurgical and pottery industries.
