Long Xuyen

City and capital of An Giang province, southern Vietnam, 160 km/99 mi west of Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon); population (2000 est) 149,300. It is situated on the Hau Giang River in the Mekong delta. Fishing and fish breeding are economically important, and the region surrounding Long Xuyen produces rice, sugar, groundnuts, and tobacco.

The city has road links with Can Tho and Chau Doc, and communication with the Gulf of Thailand is maintained via the Rach Gia Canal. The ancient city of Oc-Eo is nearby, and Long Xuyen was once the base for the Hoa Hao religious sect, founded in 1939, who emphasize simplicity in worship.
