Loo, van

    0.06 sec.

Loo, van (lived 17th–18th century)

French family of artists of Flemish extraction. Its members were Jean Baptiste van Loo (1684–1745), his eldest son Charles Amédée (1719–95), Carle (Charles André) (1705–1765), the younger brother of Jean Baptiste, and Carle's son Jules César (1743–1821).

Jean Baptiste van Loo was taught by his father and painted portraits, religious subjects for churches, and decorative compositions. In England 1737–42, he was successful in portraiture. His picture of Robert Walpole is in the National Portrait Gallery, London.

His son Charles Amédée van Loo painted portraits and historical subjects and became painter to the king of Prussia.

Carle (Charles André) van Loo, brother of Jean Baptiste, was taught by him, studying also in Rome. His subject paintings were admired in both Italy and France and he became court painter to Louis XV.

His son and pupil Jules César van Loo was a landscape painter, skilled at winter scenes.
