Lookout Mountain

Ridge of the Cumberland Plateau, southeastern USA, extending southwest for some 120 km/75 mi south of Moccasin Bend on the Tennessee River, near Chattanooga, Tennessee, across the northwest corner of Georgia, to near Gadsden, Alabama. The highest point (730 m/2,392 ft) is at the northeastern end of the ridge.

It is noted as the site (near Chattanooga) of a steep incline railway; subterranean caverns containing the 44-m/145-ft Ruby Falls, 342 m/1,120 ft below the Earth's surface; and Rock City Gardens, a 4-ha/10-acre area of sandstone formations.

The site of the American Civil War battle of Lookout Mountain (24 November 1863), on Chattanooga's southwestern side, is partially within Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.

City in northwestern Georgia, just southeast of the Lookout Mountain ridge; population (1990 est) 1,600. It is home to Covenant College (1955).
