Lopez, Aaron (1731-1782)

Portuguese-born US merchant. He established a large merchant fleet that traded along the Atlantic coast and in the West Indies but the American Revolution ruined his business. Born in Portugal, he emigrated to Newport, Rhode Island, in 1752, where he was able to practice his Jewish faith. Lopez was greatly respected in Newport for his honesty and reliability. He drowned at sea.
