Lorain County

County in northern Ohio, bounded to the north by Lake Erie; area 1,282 sq km/495 sq mi; population (1990) 271,100. Its capital is Elyria. The economy is supported by dairy, fruit, grain, livestock, and poultry farming as well as sandstone quarrying. There is substantial heavy manufacturing at Elyria, the port city of Lorain, and Wellington.

The county is intersected by the Black and Vermilion rivers.
