Los Alamos

Town in New Mexico, USA, which has had a centre for atomic and space research since 1942. In World War II the first atom (nuclear fission) bomb was built there (under Robert Oppenheimer); the hydrogen bomb was also developed there.

An uncontrollable fire, started deliberately by park rangers, left Los Alamos a smoking ruin in May 2000. 25,000 people were forced to flee their homes and the centre for atomic and space research was damaged.

The town has a population of 12,000.
