Los Andes

Town and capital of the Valparaíso region in central Chile, 104 km/67 mi northeast of Valparaíso on the Aconcagua River, at an altitude of 820 m/2,690 ft; population (1996) 34,648. Los Andes stands at the foot of the Upsallata Pass, and is located near popular skiing resorts. The town serves as the centre of a rich agricultural area producing fruit, wine, and tobacco, and is also the site of a large car assembly plant.

The Transandine Railway to Mendoza in Argentina, which was constructed between 1887 and 1912, used to pass through Los Andes, but is now disused.
