Los Gatos

City in north-central California, in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, 13 km/8 mi southwest of San Jose; population (1990) 27,400. Its industries include winemaking and electronics research and manufacture. It is also a residential suburb and health resort.

The city is named after the wild cats that once roamed the area. It was a small fruit-growing community until World War II.
