Lot-et-Garonne

Département in the Aquitaine region of France; area 5,358 sq km/2,069 sq mi; population (1999 est) 305,400. Its surface, which consists mainly of wide plains, is crossed from east to west by the rivers Garonne and Lot. The valleys of these rivers are fertile, and the slopes of the low hills are covered with orchards and vineyards. Wheat, maize, and barley are also grown. The administrative centre is Agen. Other towns include Marmande, Nérac, and Villeneuve.

Lot-et-Garonne is formed from parts of the former provinces of Guienne and Gascony.
