Lotario

Opera by Handel (librettist unknown, based on Antonio Salvi's Adelaide, not, as Burney says, on Matteo Noris's Berengario), first produced at the King's Theatre, Haymarket, London, England, on 2 December 1729. It describes strife in 10th-century Italy as Queen Adelaide's husband is killed by Berengario, who wants her to marry his son Idelberto. Held prisoner, she appeals to King Lotario of Germany, who defeats Berengario and rescues Adelaide.
