Loubet, Emile François (1838-1929)

French politician. He was President of the French Republic 1899-1906, succeeding Faure. During his presidency the Dreyfus case was finally settled. The separation of Church and State was also approved in the Chamber of Deputies, and the French ambassador was subsequently recalled from the Vatican.

He was born in Marsanne, Drome. He entered politics in 1876, and supported the Gambetta and Ferry ministries. In 1885 he became a senator, and two years later was appointed minister of public works. In 1892 he became minister of the interior, and in 1895 president of the Senate.
