Loughran, James (1931– )

Scottish conductor. He was an assistant conductor at opera houses in Bonn, Amsterdam and Milan before he became associate of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in 1962. He made his debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden with Aida in 1964. He was principal conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra 1965–71; of the Hallé Orchestra 1971–83; and of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra 1978–83. His US debut was with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in 1972.
