Mayer, Louis B(urt) (1885–1957)

Russian-born US film producer. One of the founders of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) studios in 1924, he was largely responsible for MGM's lavish style and employment of glamourous film stars.

He immigrated with his parents to Canada in 1888. Inheriting his father's scrap-metal business, he settled in Massachusetts in 1907. Attracted to the entertainment industry, he became a successful theatre-owner in New England and in 1914 began to buy the distribution rights to feature films. Mayer was soon involved in film production, moving to Los Angeles in 1918.
