Malle, Louis (1932–1995)French film director. His early work anticipated the New Wave. Working in both France and the USA, he made such films as Le Feu follet/A Time to Live and a Time to Die (1963), Atlantic City (1980), Au revoir les enfants (1987), and Damage (1993). One of the great talents to emerge in French cinema in the late 1950s, Malle made a string of innovative films beginning with Ascenseur pour l'échafaud/Lift to the Scaffold (1957), Les Amants/The Lovers (1958), and Zazie dans le métro (1961). He enjoyed a versatile career, alternating genre pieces with personal projects. His other films include Lacombe, Lucien (1974), Milou en Mai (1989), and Vanya on 42nd Street (1994).
