Louisiade Archipelago

Group of islands off the southeastern tip of New Guinea, forming part of Papua New Guinea. The islands are mountainous and covered with dense vegetation. Alluvial gold has been found. The first Europeans to visit the islands were the Dutch in 1606, and they were taken by the British in 1888. The present-day inhabitants have Malayan and Papuan origins.
