Lovett, Robert

Lovett, Robert (1895–1986)

US secretary of defence. Lovett served in many governmental positions under the administration of President Harry Truman, including under secretary of state (1947–49), before becoming secretary of defence (1951–53). Lovett was born in Huntsville, Texas. He was a Yale University graduate, and initially worked as an investment banker. He was a director of the Union Pacific Railroad for over fifty years.
