lumbago

Pain in the lower region of the back, usually due to strain or faulty posture. If it occurs with sciatica, it may be due to pressure on spinal nerves from a slipped disc. Treatment includes rest, application of heat, and skilled manipulation. Surgery may be needed in rare cases.

Lumbago is typically sudden in onset, with an acute pain afflicting the person during some movement of the back. In some cases the onset of pain is gradual and becomes increasingly severe. The lumbar muscles go into spasmodic contraction. Prevention of lumbago is important; anyone involved in lifting and handling heavy items should make sure they observe correct techniques, with the article lifted close to the body, with bent knees and straight back.
