Lowndes County

County in south-central Alabama, southwest of Montgomery; area 1,849 sq km/714 sq mi; population (1990) 12,700. Its capital is Hayneville (population (1990) 1,000). It is rich in cotton, cattle, and pecans. The Alabama River forms its northern boundary. The population of Lowndes County has long been predominantly black (75% in 1990).

The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee sought political control here after 1964, but their Lowndes County Freedom Organization (called the Black Panther Party, a name later used elsewhere) was ultimately unsuccessful.
