Lowe, Hudson (1769–1844)

Irish-born English general. He entered the army in 1787. After the outbreak of war with France in 1793, he saw active service in Corsica, Gibraltar, Minorca, and Egypt. In 1815 he was appointed custodian of Napoleon and governor of St Helena, a post he retained until Napoleon's death in 1821.

He was born in Galway. From 1825–30 he commanded British forces in Ceylon.
