Loxton

Town in South Australia, 273 km/170 mi north of Adelaide; population (1996) 3,300. Current industries include fruit growing, wine production, sheep, cattle, and cereal crops.

The area was settled for farming in the 1890s. Many of the early settlers were German immigrants. The town was proclaimed in 1907 on the banks of the River Murray. A railway to the town opened in 1914 which facilitated further expansion of agriculture. The town has since become an important service centre for the agricultural industry.
