Lozère

Département in Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France; area 5,168 sq km/1,995 sq mi; population (1999 est) 73,500. Occupying a section of the Cévennes Mountains, it rises in Finiels to 1,702 m/5,584 ft. The principal towns are Mende (the administrative centre) and Florac.

Cattle and sheep are reared on the lower slopes of the mountain ranges, and olives, vines, and mulberries are grown. Cheese-making and the rearing of silkworms are important industries. Lead, silver, copper, and antimony are mined; marble, granite, and slate are quarried. Lozère was formerly part of the old province of Languedoc.

Spanish media reported that Borrero, 24, was suspected of involvement in a gun battle with French police in Lozere in southern France at the beginning of June in which a policeman was injured.
