LouangphrabangBuddhist religious centre in Laos, on the Mekong River at the head of river navigation; population (2007 est) 52,500. Most tourists in Laos stop in Luang Prabang (lwahng pruh-BAHNG), a city of traditional red-and-gold rooted temples and modern bakeries. Outside Vientiane City and Province, patients with scrub typhus came from Houaphanh and Borikhamxay Provinces, and patients with murine typhus came from Borikhamxay and Luang Prabang Provinces. Hue in Vietnam, Solo in Java, Bagan in Myanmar, Luang Prabang in northern Laos, and so on, were all important capital cities in the precolonial national context but were abandoned in favour of new capitals better serving colonial interests. |
