Lubbock

City in northwestern Texas, USA, 180 km/112 mi south of Amarillo, situated on the eastern edge of the high plains at an altitude of about 1,000 m/3,281 ft; seat of Lubbock County; population (2000) 199,600. Often called the ‘Hub of the High Plains’, the city is a trading centre for cotton. Industries include the production of cottonseed oil and sorghum (a type of millet), meat packing, the manufacture of heavy machinery for farming and the construction industry, and mobile homes.

Lubbock was founded in 1890 and incorporated in 1909. The city is the seat of Texas Technical University (1923) and Lubbock Christian University (1957). The rock-and-roll singer Buddy Holly was born in Lubbock.
