Lubec

Easternmost town in the USA, in eastern Maine; population (1990) 1,900. It lies between Cobscook Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, just south of Eastport, of which it was originally part. Tourism and fishing are the mainstays of the local economy.

It includes several villages, and West Quoddy Head, the nation's easternmost point. An international bridge connects Lubec with Campobello Island. Chaloner Tavern (1804) was a 19th-century trading point for sugar, molasses, flour, and rum smuggled from Canada.
