LublinCity in Poland, on the Bystrzyca River, 150 km/95 mi southeast of Warsaw; population (2002) 357,100. Industries include textiles, engineering, aircraft, and electrical goods. A trading centre from the 10th century, it has an ancient citadel, a 16th-century cathedral, and a university (1918). A council of workers and peasants proclaimed Poland's independence at Lublin 1918, and a Russian-sponsored committee of national liberation, which proclaimed itself the provincial government of Poland at Lublin on 31 December 1944, was recognized by Russia five days later.
