Lubumbashi

Town in the Democratic Republic of Congo, on the Lualaba River, close to the Zambian border; population (2004 est) 1,283,400. It is the chief commercial centre of the Shaba copper-mining region, with the headquarters of Gecamines, the national copper-mining company, being based here. The Lubumbashi campus of the University of Kinshasa (1955) is here.

Industries

The major industry is copper-smelting. Cobalt, cadmium and zinc are also processed.

History

Lubumbashi was founded in 1910 by the Belgians in a previously sparsely settled area, following copper finds nearby. It was named Elisabethville after the Belgian queen. After the centre of copper mining shifted northwestwards, it remained the business centre for the whole Shaba mining zone.
