Lucan (AD 39–65)Latin poet. Born in Córdoba, Spain, he was a nephew of the writer Seneca and favourite of Nero until the emperor became jealous of his verse. Lucan then joined a republican conspiracy and committed suicide on its failure. His epic poem Pharsalia, in ten books (the last incomplete), deals with the civil wars of Caesar and Pompey 49–48 BC, and was influential in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Lucan
