Lucas, Scott (Wike) (1892–1968)

US politician. A Democrat serving Illinois, he was elected to the US House of Representatives (1935–39) and to the US Senate (1939–51). He supported the New Deal, and was a Democratic whip and Senate majority leader. His liberal beliefs left him politically vulnerable in the McCarthy era (see McCarthyism), and he was defeated in his bid for re-election to a third term. Lucas was born near Chandlerville, Illinois.
