Luce, Stephen Bleecker

Luce, Stephen Bleecker (1827–1917)

US naval officer. He served in the Mexican and Civil wars. He was deeply interested in the training of seamen and naval officers. His interest led to the establishment of the Naval College at Newport (1884). As the college's first president, he appointed Alfred T Mahan to the faculty. His Seamanship (1863) became a classic textbook. Luce was born in Albany, New York.
