Lucera

Town in Apulia region, southeast Italy, on the edge of the Tavoliere plain, 20 km/12 mi northwest of Foggia; population (1998 est) 37,500. Industries include building materials and dairy produce, and there is an oil refinery. There is a Roman amphitheatre, built during the emperor Augustus' reign, a ruined 13th-century castle, a 14th-century cathedral, and a fine episcopal palace.

Lucera was the most important town in southern Italy of the Angevins (descendants of Charles I of Anjou (1227–1285), King of Naples and Sicily).
