Rie, Lucie (1902–1995)

Austrian-born potter. She worked in England from the 1930s. Her pottery, exhibited all over the world, is simple and pure in form, showing a debt to English potter Bernard Leach.

Leach's most famous pupil, however, was Lucie Rie, who was born in Vienna in 1902 and studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule (school of arts and crafts) attached to the Wiener Werkstatte under the brilliant ceramicist Michael Powolny.
