Lucier, Alvin (1931– )

US composer. His Music for Solo Performer (1965) uses amplified brain signals in harmony with percussion instruments. In 1966 he founded the Sonic Arts Union (with Gordon Mumma and Robert Ashley), for the performance of electronic music.

He studied at Yale University 1950–54, and at Brandeis 1958–60, becoming choral director there 1962–70. He was professor at Wesleyan University 1970–84.

Vespers (1969), The Queen of the South with closed circuit TV system (1972), Bird and Person Dying (1975), Shape of Sounds from the Board for piano (1979), sound installation (1983), Serenade for 13 winds and pure wave oscillator (1985), Music for Men, Women and Reflecting Walls (1986), Salmon River Valley Songs (1986), Fidelio-trio (1988), Navigations for string quartet (1991).
