Lucio Silla

Opera by Mozart (libretto by G de Gamerra, with alterations by Pietro Metastasio), first produced at the Teatro Regio Ducal, Milan, Italy, on 26 December 1772.

It is also the title of an opera by Johann Christian Bach (libretto ditto), first produced before the court in Mannheim, Germany, on 4 November 1774. The story tells how the banished Cecilio returns to Rome to try to rescue his fiancée Giunia from the dictator Sulla. Cecilio, after failing in an assassination attempt, is condemned to die by Sulla, but the dictator shows compassion when Giunia declares her love.
