Luckock, Margarette Rae Morrison

    0.82 sec.

Luckock, Margarette Rae Morrison (1893–1972)

Canadian politician. Luckock joined the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) when it was formed in 1932, serving as its education critic, and focusing on funding for university scholarships, free university education, and improving rural education. She also promoted equal pay for equal work and paying homemakers for work done in the home. It was not until 1943, however, that she became involved in provincial politics, winning election to the Ontario legislative assembly. Luckock and Agnes Macphail were the first women elected to the Ontario legislature. In 1948, she was one of a number of suspected communists within the CCF who were expelled from the party.

Luckock grew up on the family farm in Arthur, Ontario. Her father, James J Morrison, was one of the founders of the United Farmers of Ontario party in 1914; his political activism influenced the young Luckock. Shortly after a peace visit to China in 1956 she was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. She spent the last 14 years of her life in hospital.
