Ludhiana

Town in Punjab state, northwest India, on the south bank of the Sutlej River, 117 km/73 mi southeast of Amritsar; population (2001) 1,395,100. It is an important grain market for the surrounding area, and has textile, steel, and food-processing industries. The Punjab Agricultural University is located here, as well as the Christian Medical College Hospital, one of southern Asia's major teaching and research hospitals.
