Ludington

City and administrative headquarters of Mason County, west-central Michigan, on Lake Michigan and Pere Marquette Lake, at the mouth of the Pere Marquette River, 80 km/50 mi northwest of Muskegon; population (2000) 8,400. It is a manufacturing centre, producing game boards, railway equipment, car parts, chemicals, clothing, and furniture. It is also a port and beach resort, with sport fishing.

The spot where the French missionary Père Marquette is thought to have died (1675) is marked by a large illuminated cross that overlooks the harbour.
