Ludwig, Walther (1902–1981)

German tenor. He studied medicine and started his stage career in 1928, working in Schwerin 1929–32, where he created the title role in Graener's Wilhelm Friedemann Bach in 1931. He appeared at the Städtische Oper, Berlin, 1932–45, in the lyric repertory, and at Glyndebourne in 1935, as Belmonte and Tamino. His Mozart performances were also highly praised at Salzburg. He undertook many concert tours in Europe and South America and retired from singing in 1962 to resume his medical career.
