Ludwigsburg

City in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, 14 km/9 mi north of Stuttgart; population (1994) 483,100. Ludwigsburg was once a porcelain centre, but its main manufactures are now machinery and toys. There are three castles.

Formerly the second royal residence of Württemberg, Ludwigsburg is laid out with extensive parks and avenues. One of the castles, the former Residenzschloss (royal residence) 1704–33, is an enormous baroque complex containing some 450 rooms in 18 buildings.
