Ludwigshafen am Rhein

City and river port, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, sited on the left bank of the Rhine, opposite Mannheim, 59 km/37 mi southeast of Mainz; population (2005 est) 163,300. Products include chemicals, dyes, fertilizers, plastics, electrical goods, glass, timber, and textiles. The chemical company BASF (Badische Anilin und Soda-Fabrik) has its headquarters here.
