Lüdenscheid

City in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, 55 km/34 mi east of Düsseldorf; population (1994) 81,200. It once belonged to the Hanseatic League trade federation, and its iron industries date from the Middle Ages. Today there are aluminium, machinery, and metallurgical industries in the town.
