Lugo

Capital of the province of Lugo in Galicia, northwest Spain, on the River Miño; population (2001) 88,400. It is surrounded by massive Roman walls, now promenades, and has a cathedral dating partly from the 12th century. There are hot sulphur springs nearby, which have been used since Roman times. Lugo has an important meat industry.

Province of northwest Spain in northeast Galicia autonomous community; area 9,803 sq km/3,785 sq mi; population (1991 est) 381,900. Its northern coastline is on the Bay of Biscay. The basins of the rivers Miño and its tributary the Sil, which flow through Lugo, are very fertile, but much of the rest of the province has poor, thin soils. The capital is Lugo.
